Welcome to 2nd Grade!

What an exciting time in 2nd Grade!  We've been adjusting to new schedules, new curriculum, and for some a new teacher.  I have been very impressed with the leadership being shown in our class.  We begin our day with Morning Work and continue when the bell rings to our Morning Meeting.  Our Morning Meeting Manager now leads our meeting according to our set plan.  Great job Oscar! We have many leadership roles and jobs this year.  If your child has a job but not a leadership role yet, he/she will eventually rotate in.

We've adjusted our schedule so Math is now the first academic subject. Student leaders get us started with routines. Last week we had our first assessment.  While most understood the arithmetic, there was still a little confusion on following the directions about showing knowledge of a certain strategy.  This week we will be looking at math mountains in a new light, adding and subtracting with triangles (mountains).  We are focusing on which numbers are totals and partners in fact families.

After specials, recess and lunch, we settle into Reader's Workshop.  So far we are perfecting the Independent Reading/Reader's Response Station and the Word Work Station.  During station time, I am still doing mClass BOY testing but hope to finish up this week.  In Writing, we are focusing on creating complete sentences with punctuation as we move into writing narratives.  Narratives are still focusing on a small moment, well described, with an introduction (who, what, when, where), a middle filled with details of what and why, and a conclusion, sharing our feelings about the experience.

We are learning about civic leadership and government in Social Studies.  We have been comparing our classroom jobs, school jobs, and government jobs in the community.

Our behavior has been excellent for the most part, DoJo points are frequent.  Our DoJo points for the Quarterly Celebration are not shared.  Students can earn 3 of those each week.  Ask you child about how he/she is doing with HW, clean desk, and leadership points.

That's it for now! Thanks for all your support at home getting homework done and everyone to bed early!  Have a great week!
