Report cards are coming home Monday, February 11. Along with them will be tests/work that support the grades your student has on his/her report card. Please take time to see in what areas your child may benefit from extra support from home. Often, Quarter 2 will show a little drop in the number of 4s achieved on report cards. Don't be concerned if that is your student's case. Quarter 3 usually is indicative of the growth in maturity second graders often show after the middle of the year in 2nd grade. Many students have already begun to show improvement in effort this quarter.

We are continuing our work in Place Value Addition this week, practicing the addition of three 2-digit numbers. Our EL unit is focusing on pollinators. Everyone is very excited about plants, flowers, fruits and pollinators right now. Remember to have students work on their Economics Day project they will offer for "sale" at the end of the unit. It involves so much less stress to spread out the activity instead of doing all at the last minute.

Remember to sign your child's reading log EVERY night. It is our classroom's WIG as well as our grade level WIG this quarter. It also noticeably improves fluency.

Thanks for all of you who could come out to the Awards Day Ceremony last Friday. The students really enjoyed it.

Have a great week!Donna Freemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930627241658239248noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4203201404322785078.post-34527199136083062452019-02-06T12:31:00.002-08:002019-02-06T12:31:47.116-08:00Third Quarter is successfully underway! Welcome back! First, I want to thank all of you for your amazing generosity you showed me at Christmas. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!

This quarter is off to the best start yet. Students are meeting the goals they set for themselves and are working hard. The word that describes most of the day is respectful. I'm very proud of how much they have matured so far this year.

Upcoming events include Awards Day, February, 8, at 10:20 in the Media Center. Everyone will get an award.

In Math, we're working on place value with a closer look at comparison. In Literacy, we're learning about parts of plants and what they do in our unit, the Secret Life of Pollinators. Hope everyone has chosen a good to produce for the Economics Fair. Ask students about our plant experiment!

Have a great week!Donna Freemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930627241658239248noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4203201404322785078.post-80855849249015298462018-10-23T08:00:00.000-07:002018-10-23T08:00:22.807-07:00Welcome to 2nd Quarter! Everyone is getting back into routines and procedures, getting ready to learn in a new quarter. In Literacy, we are diving into fossils! We are exploring what paleontologists do and will eventually have a plaster of paris fossil dig of our own.

The Science Unit for this quarter is Weather. It's a great time to be looking at changes in temperature, wind, leaves, precipitation and barometric pressure.

Math focus is on word problems early in the quarter, with authentic stories involving comparison, change plus and change minus with unknowns in all positions. Getting a firm foundation in comprehension of what a word problem is telling us and asking us is crucial so we can write the matching equation and using what we know about properties of addition and subtraction, we can rewrite the equation as a solution equation.

Social Studies will be later on in the quarter and will involve learning about cultures.

We are excited about our classroom WIG! It is 100% of students will read 15 or more minutes every night Monday through Thursday nights! We will add our results with the rest of 2nd grade and chart on the hall graph. Please help your child read every night so we can be successful. When our class has 100% for the whole week, everyone will get 10 DoJo points, maybe more! More rewards will come if we keep it up.

Fun Run is Nov. 7 and we are having an assembly today to talk about it and get excited! We have jugs in front of the office to fill with change as we raise money for our school. All donations are needed and appreciated. Each grade level is in a contest to see which one raises more money. Send in your extra change if you can!

Awards Day for first quarter is coming up. I'll send more information on that when the date is finalized. Have a great week!Donna Freemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930627241658239248noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4203201404322785078.post-51662614684584431642018-08-13T18:53:00.001-07:002018-08-13T18:53:36.603-07:00It's already the 3rd week of the year! We're off and running, learning to be Proactive by staying in charge of ourselves at school. We're beginning to get compliments in the hall and sometimes in Specials.

In Literacy, we're doing "close reading" with the book, The Invisible Boy, learning to think deeply about the concepts the author is presenting and support our opinions with text based evidence. We are learning the rules associated with the vowel teams, "ee", "ea", and the letter "y" as they all say the vowel sound long e in our skills block.

In Math, we've had a test on odd and even and using the number line to solve addition and subtraction problems to 20. We have begun working on mental math strategies and targeting the counting on strategy instead of the earlier strategy of counting all.

In some sweet news, a parent sent in surprise doughnuts on Friday, and we enjoyed them thoroughly! Also, one of our families has donated a basketball to our class. Thank you all so much and for the supplies you have brought in as well. We are very grateful!

News this week includes Friday's Early Release. We will be choosing clubs and students will write down their first 5 choices. Clubs will begin on the next Early Release Day. We will get out at 1:15. If you need to change your transportation plans, please send me a written note by Friday. Dojo messages will be accepted. Have a great week!

Donna Freemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930627241658239248noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4203201404322785078.post-71894012907717505202018-07-30T18:56:00.000-07:002018-07-30T18:56:30.773-07:00Welcome to 2nd Grade! We have been learning about following expectations around the school. This year we've graduated from "SWIMming" to "LEADing". L is for Lead by Example, E is for Exibit Safety, A is for Act Respectfully, and D is for Deliver Greatness. Our class has improved everyday so far and is becoming a class of focused leaders.

We have begun a new curriculum in Literacy called EL. You will hear more about it in the future. We all like the changes so far. We're still teaching the same standards but in a different format. The Math curriculum has also made some improvements with more of a focus on having a growth mindset and collaborating with our math community. With all that underway, I can say we're off to a good start.

The cafeteria would like you to know that lunch prices have increased to $2.55 for this school year. We eat at 12:35, and you are welcome to come eat with your child when you have the opportunity.

I did not send Monday folders home since there wasn't much to send yet. They'll go out next week. We're waiting on our subscription renewal to give out passwords for programs such as RAZ Kids, etc. Thank you for the wonderful supplies that you've been sending in and for sharing your children with me. They are a group of hard working, caring students, and I think we will have a very successful year!Donna Freemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930627241658239248noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4203201404322785078.post-35566293161155081302018-05-22T09:28:00.002-07:002018-05-22T09:28:16.645-07:00It's the last quarter of Second Grade, and it's almost June! How did that happen? You can find a few highlights of whats coming up under the tab "Calendar". Please make sure your child is getting enough sleep each night. This is the season of standardized testing, and although we don't do EOG, we do have a cumulative math assessment, reading/writing assessment and a foundational number knowledge test. I'm proud of the many accomplishments I see in the class, but I'd like to see everyone really work to improve their written responses to what they've read. Please encourage reading and responding every night. Remember: NO SCHOOL on next Monday for Memorial Day. Happy 4th Quarter!

Donna Freemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930627241658239248noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4203201404322785078.post-15037530617823744882018-01-25T09:14:00.001-08:002018-01-25T09:14:03.643-08:00Welcome to 3rd Quarter!

It's hard to believe that half the year has already flown by. Hold on to your hats, this quarter goes very fast. Everyone has come back to school ready to work and seems to be a year older! Here are some things coming up on our schedule:
Ms. Kelly Lyons will come present a workshop to our second grade students. She has several books in our media center.
Report cards on Monday
Hurricanes practice on Feb. 21st
Enterprise Day will be toward the end of Feb. (Details coming in Monday folder)
Please look at the tab "Calendar" for important dates

In Math, we are wrapping up our study of time. We can tell and write time to 5 minute intervals, use digital and analog clocks, and tell whether the time is a.m. or p.m. Hold on to your pockets, money is next!

In Social Studies, we are beginning the unit on Economics. This is a fun unit, learning about producers and consumers, wants and needs and supply and demand. We end by having an Enterprise Day. Each student will produce a product, decide on a price and create a display. All the second grade will come shopping with the "school bucks" they've earned this quarter. Look for details in next week's Monday Folder.

Writing will include realistic fiction and then, poetry.

In Literacy, we are learning how a character responds to the problem/challenge in a story and how he/she finds a solution.

Keep students reading and responding at night. Happy Winter!

Donna Freemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930627241658239248noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4203201404322785078.post-14500066610722313292017-12-21T06:29:00.001-08:002017-12-21T06:29:47.562-08:00December Fun!So, it's been a fun, stress-filled, exciting time in our class! Stress often gets intense for students around the holidays, so we've tried to do some stress relieving activities this week. As we finished up our tests, we did a few things to get ready for 3rd Quarter. We talked about 3-D shapes vs. 2-D shapes. We planned winter castles that had to contain at least 1 rectangular prism, 1 cylinder, and 1 cone. As they made their plan, we integrated writing into our project. They had to write a brief history of their castle. When the castle was completed, they wrote a story involving the people who live their. Today, when someone completes their story, they may collaborate with a neighboring village and begin to build bridges between the "table communities". It's fun to stop and do something a little different to spark imagination and a love for learning. Thanks so much for all the gifts you have showered me with! Have a Merry Christmas!Donna Freemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930627241658239248noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4203201404322785078.post-12204767904998786932017-11-27T05:04:00.000-08:002017-11-27T05:04:20.187-08:00Heading Toward December!I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving! Now that we're back, we'll be heading into exciting times. In math, we will be beginning double digit subtraction. This is one of my favorite things to teach. I have a rap we created last year to remind students how to do double digit subtraction using the expanded form. We will be wrapping up the science unit on weather, and as we continue to look at the what the author wants us to understand in reading, we will begin to compare and contrast the most important point presented by two texts on the same topic. We will begin math interventions during team time, as well as, practice present skills and go deeper into concepts we are learning.

Please ask your students what goals they are working on at school. Many have a goal of reading a book every night (or 15 to 20 minutes) and sending in two written responses each week. There is a celebration waiting for those who accomplish their goals plus the feeling of accomplishment having set a lifetime habit of being responsible.

The in-school science field trip is coming up. Please send in the fees soon if you haven't already. It's $24.00 for the year (3 lessons with a scientist) or $8.00 per session. Thanks for making this possible for your children. They really get excited about science!

Finally, in this time of giving, I can never repay you for the gift of sharing your children with me. Thank you.

Welcome to our four students from Mrs. Whitman's class who will be with us for the entirety of second quarter. Our class is beginning to find a bit of a rhythm and is settling down to work more independently.

Awards day for Quarter 1 is Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 3:05. This is a small affair held in our classroom. If your child has won an award, you will have already received an individual Dojo informing you. If your child isn't involved this quarter, he/she will be getting an award at at least one celebration. Now for academics...

In Math, we are beginning to look closely at place value and the many different representations we can show of a number. We have looked at the 100's chart, as well as the 200's chart and have found patterns and ways of counting, adding and subtracting.

In Literacy, we've been discussing what pictures and images add to our comprehension of a text. We work daily on writing about what we comprehend.

Please continue to have your students read and write about it over track out. It is the difference of being on grade level and above, or being below grade level. I will send home a track-out packet of math review pages.

Thanks to those of you who came out for Open House. The students enjoyed showing off their Leadership Notebooks! We'll have more data in them as the year progresses.

Be on the lookout for a conference sheet sign up page coming home Wednesday. Please pick 3 choices to help me with scheduling. Conference day is Friday, Oct. 20, the workday before track-in.
Report cards will go home the Friday after we track back in.

Have a safe and happy track-out!Donna Freemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930627241658239248noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4203201404322785078.post-27754868286465570462017-08-23T05:48:00.000-07:002017-08-23T05:49:01.099-07:00Welcome to life post-eclipse! We watched numerous feeds across the country on NASA's live feed, some exciting, some not so exciting. We saw the sky take on a different light, but we were very disappointed that it didn't get as dark as we expected. The booklet we explored helped us understand a little more about the Earth's rotation around the sun and the moon's rotation around the Earth.

In academics this week we are reviewing mental math strategies for problem solving. We have been practicing creating word problems, discussing their situation and matching equation, and then solving using a strategy. We've practiced making a ten by taking enough from the other partner to make a ten and then adding the ones left over. For example, 8 + 7 = ? can be thought of as (8 + 2) + 5. Flexibility in math thinking is important for a strong math background. We also have been looking at equality as the "same value" on each side of the equation. We practiced with number trains. We continue this week with partners, totals, missing partner, and missing total.

In Reading, we are asking and answering questions as we retell the beginning, middle and end of a story. We are writing narratives using strategies. We have begun to work in independent work stations that support the standards being taught while others have a guided reading group. We are becoming independent workers who can synergize with others to promote higher comprehension.

Our Science Unit involves investigation of solids, liquids and gases.

Hope you have a great week!Donna Freemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930627241658239248noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4203201404322785078.post-86646749204188210362017-08-07T16:34:00.000-07:002017-08-07T16:34:55.269-07:00Getting into Routine

As Week 2 gets underway, everyone is adjusting to new 2nd grade expectations and the new schedule. We're all happy to know where we're going and when we get back! I'm getting a handle on the double special days finally.

This week in Math, we continue looking at numbers as 10s and 1s using ten frames. Last week, we compared the strategies of "counting all" and "counting on". This week we have worked with the commutative property, noticing the partners in addition problems can trade places and still represent the same value. Subatizing is a part of our daily routine where we learn that our brains recognize numbers in patterns faster than counting randomly ordered groups of ones (for example, dot patterns on dice). We've also added another "game" to our daily routine where students complete a circuit and earn a tens card. They can count how many places they have moved by knowing how many tens cards they've earned plus how many ones their game piece is adding to the total.

In Literacy, we are taking a close look at using the beginning, middle and end as a way of retelling key details and story elements. We are also asking and answering questions as we read. We've learned how to choose an activity from the Word Work station, Reading Comprehension station, Fluency station and Vocabulary station. We are writing narratives, working on sentence structure, as well as paragraph structure.

Please note the Calendar tab at the top of the page is updated with important upcoming dates.

Welcome to homework and have a great week! : )Donna Freemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930627241658239248noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4203201404322785078.post-12190619735661158492017-08-01T18:38:00.000-07:002017-08-01T18:38:26.810-07:00Welcome to 2nd Grade!

I hope your child is having a successful week settling in to a new grade level. From my viewpoint, everyone is trying hard to be proactive leaders and good friends. I was able to pull most of you into our class on Dojo from the system. There are four families that still need to connect and that information should come home to you on Wednesday. For those of you who aren't familiar with Dojo, it is a system of fast communication from me to you and you to me.
You are able to see the Dojo points your child earns during the day. Occasionally, I will add points at the end of the day, but often they will be logged in during the day. Students can use their points at the Otter Den, the school store, for purchasing small items or privileges such as helping a teacher for 15 minutes.

Next, I want to address our schedule! It is new and alternates from "A" days to "B" days. One week, Monday, Wednesday, Friday follows the "A" day schedule and Tuesday, Thursday follows the "B" day schedule. The following week, there are three "B" days and two "A" days. It sounds confusing, but it is easier to do than explain. I'll try to show you in the following chart:
"A" "B"
8:45-9:15 - Arrival 8:45-9:15 - Arrival

As you can see, the 11:00 - 12:30 slot is what changes from one day to the next. On "A" days, we have 2 specials, on "B" days, we do not have specials at all.

Here is a list of our specials on "A" days and "B" days:

All days with Specials are "A" days. During a Week 1, you can see the specials we go to. On Week 2, the "A" days are Tues. and Thurs. The weeks will alternate all year. I hope this helps you understand a little more clearly. The students and I are already beginning to adjust to the new schedule.

This week, we are making our class mission statement, setting our WIGS!, and applying for leadership roles in our classroom. We are also practicing subatizing, break apart numbers and decomposing tens and ones in math. In Lang. Arts, we are reading and describing the structure of the story by looking at what happens at the beginning, middle and at the end of the story. We took a pre-assessment in writing to see where we are with narratives. We're learning all sorts of rules and procedures, but my main rule is "show respect in everything you do". I'm happy to say this is a class who is working on being in charge of themselves and not giving up. I'm excited about the new year!Donna Freemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930627241658239248noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4203201404322785078.post-86108170672230860752017-06-30T01:44:00.001-07:002017-06-30T01:44:06.939-07:00Well, it's finally here! Our class has had a year full of success! I've seen some amazing growth, as well as, students beginning to take charge of themselves and their learning. It has been such an honor to watch these children grow in leadership and responsibility. Report cards go home today, so be on the lookout for them. If your child misses the last day, report cards can be picked up in the office during track-out. I wish you all a very happy summer break and a wonderful year in 3rd grade!Donna Freemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930627241658239248noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4203201404322785078.post-2715468293717428522017-05-15T18:36:00.000-07:002017-05-24T05:02:47.231-07:00Fourth Quarter is flying by! We've had some impressive accomplishments. One of them is performing our rap at Leadership Day. The second grade was given the task of explaining Habit 2, Begin with the End in Mind. We wrote a rap entitled, "The End is Our Beginning". They did a great job. Here is a link to the performance. When you click on it, you will have some choices. You may need to click on show all. Then, choose the video that has a picture of the red curtains closed. We are after the Habit Chant, first grade and pre-K. It's about half-way through the video, but watching the entire video will give you a taste of the day. Go to 13:14 for our part. bit.ly/lmesyoutube Some of the best parts get cut off, but I'm so happy someone was able to record it!

Thursday, May 25, is our 2nd grade Music performance night from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Students need to arrive by 6:15 and come to their classroom. The second grade teachers will meet them there and take them to the gym when the time comes. The dance portion is first.

Interims go home next Monday in Monday folders. Be on the lookout for them.

Academically, we are learning about measurement using inches, feet, yards as well as centimeters and meters in Math. In Reading, we are reading non-fiction books and comparing facts and looking at connections. In writing, we are working on opinion papers. Science is full of the butterfly life cycle! Ask about our butterfly house!

Again, thank you so much for your wonderfully kind gifts during Teacher Appreciation Week, and sharing your amazing children. This is really a great class.Donna Freemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930627241658239248noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4203201404322785078.post-82116079059851916062017-03-17T05:38:00.001-07:002017-03-17T05:38:47.876-07:00Happy Winter, no Spring, no Winter! Oh my! At least I know it's St. Patrick's Day! I haven't been sick in years, but I'm sorry to say I was very sick with the stomach virus, followed by a tremendous cold. I'm on the mend now so I hope to be on top of things from here to the end of the year!

We had a great in-school field trip about Sound where the students did hands on experiments and got to take home some "gak". If you haven't paid the $8.00 for the field trip then it's probably my fault for being sick and forgetting to send the reminder home last week. You can still pay if you haven't and I would be most thankful. (Don't worry. I'll send a reminder in the Monday folder if you haven't paid.)

Next week is our last week before trackout. Homework is optional next week. Many of you have asked for more homework to enrich or intervene for your child. I will send a few things home next week, but in Quarter 4, there will be more choices.

Academically, we are completing our Quarter 3 units. We finished up our exciting unit of Economics in Social Studies with a bang! The projects were great! Our Science test is coming up the first of next week on sound. Ask your child about sound waves. We are also finishing our unit on triple digit subtraction. In Literacy, we've been comparing and contrasting different versions of the same fairy tale and now different texts about the same non-fiction topic. To prepare for the math test, ask your child to compare and contrast two strategies for solving three digit subtraction problems. Also, we are writing poetry. I love this unit! Can't wait for them to publish their finished products.

Leadership Day is coming up in May. The 2nd Grade is in charge of presenting Habit 2, Begin with the End in Mind. Our class has been asked to create and perform a rap about Habit 2. We have written a rough draft and are making final changes. Exciting times!

I hope you and your family stay well and warm. Have a great weekend!
Hope you are enjoying this early spring weather. Thanks so much to those of you who came out for students led conferences. The students were so excited!

I want to remind you of the information that went home earlier this quarter about the Economics Fair. I've been reminding students for some time, but I want to give you a head's up that the items they have made are due to be brought in on Thursday so they will be here by Friday. That gives them an extra day to bring them in if they forget. They need about 20 items which they have designed to sell (for fake money that students have earned). We will rotate to all classrooms to view and buy their products as well. We will discuss how much money they made, who sold the most items, and did they need to put their products on sale at the end of the fair. Supply and demand, producers and consumers are topics we have discussed. Their assessment will be writing about their experiences and understanding of terms on Monday.

Next week is Literacy Week! Everyday is a dress up day. A paper went home explaining each day. Check the school website if you loose the paper. I'll update later.

We are working on arrays in math, comparing different versions of fairy tales in reading, writing realistic fiction stories and economics in Social Studies, and we will begin our unit on sound for Science next week. Our next Science in house field trip will be Mar. 15.

Have a great week!Donna Freemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930627241658239248noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4203201404322785078.post-23848973579651182722017-01-23T18:23:00.000-08:002017-01-23T18:23:08.957-08:00Welcome back and Happy 2017!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and winter break! Thank you so much for all the Christmas gifts. You are amazing parents. That must be why you've sent wonderfully amazing students into our class.

We're off to great start this week beginning with our math unit "Money". We are looking at coins, discussing how much they are worth, how many it takes to make a dollar, and learning to count money by skip counting. We will use what we're learning in our social studies unit "Economics". At the end of the quarter we will have an economics fair where students will manufactor items to sell. They will be able to purchase other students' products by earning Dojo points which will be turned into school bucks for use at the Economics Fair. This will be later in the quarter and details will come home closer to the actual event.

In reading, we're looking at how the character reacts to events or crises that happen in the story and how they change as a result. Next week, we will have a writer in residence come work with 2nd grade. We had her come last year and had a very positive experience.

Finally, on Thursday evening, Feb. 16, we will have student-led conferences. Each student will be prepared to share their Leader in Me notebook, explaining their academic goals and strategies to achieve them. They will show where they are now and how they are working to improve. This will be a very exciting time. Please mark your calendars now so you can come. I will send out a sign up for you to schedule a time slot for the conference. There will be other things to do that evening as well. More details will be coming in the next few weeks.

While we were sad to say goodbye to Josiah as he moved to another school, we are excited about our new student, Jamarius Vaughn. Tuesday will be his first day and we look forward to getting to know him!

We're also excited about our progress so far this year. Please encourage your child to write about what they read at night. It makes so much difference! Have a great week!
It's already, November, Quarter 2, and we're off to an excellent start! Our behavior has been excellent as well as our academic focus. We have applied for new leadership roles in the classroom, and we have different seats and table groups as well.

In Math, we are working hard on place value, considering different ways to look at hundreds, tens and ones of a three digit number. We are using place value blocks, calculators, and digital devices to practice our new skills. We have added the website "Moby Max" to assess weakness in math background and allows students to work remedially to shore up those weaknesses as well as move ahead when students are ready. We use this program during Team Time in the afternoon.

In Literacy, we are working on comparing and contrasting similar texts using Venn Diagrams. Our Reading Stations include Vocabulary: adding words, meanings and non-verbal representations (pictures) from text talk book to our vocabulary notebooks
Fluency: Rereading fluency passage of the week to a buddy daily
Word Work: Spelling City activities with Letterland words, "Scrabble Words" with Letterland words, Smart Board activity using spelling pattern being learned that week, Memory/Spell Letterland words with a partner, and writing words in ABC order. ABC order is a must do. Students are expected to complete at least 2 Word Work assignments each week with proof.
Comprehension: Students read a book and respond in their Reader Response notebook. They choose books from library and books from Raz Kids on the computer. I have limited their choices to the reading level they are on, one level up and one level down to allow for a variety of choices. Each student must complete 2 entries each week.
Students have a check-off sheet in a page protector sleeve in their Reading Folder. They check off their Reading Station activities each week and meet with me on Fridays to show what they've accomplished independently.
During Reading Stations, I call reading groups to the table to read and practice literacy skills with me.

Science this quarter is about weather. We will have an in-house field trip focused on this topic the week of Thanksgiving.

We're still raising money for Fun Run competition. We will use the money for books students get for reading and filling out their reading logs monthly. Remember to send in your fund raising envelope soon. We're in a competition with the second grade for most money raised. Thanks for all you've given and all you do to support your child's learning! The students are well behaved and interested in learning. That's a huge positive reflection on you! Thanks so much. Have a great week! I'll keep you posted on Dojo!

One more thing: We created a rap about writing a paragraph. The site "Flocabulary" teaches vocabulary using raps. They saw the tweet of our rap, retweeted it, and sent us a personal tweet to tell us how much they liked it!!! The students and I were so excited!!! Follow us on Twitter: Donna Freeman@df0156Donna Freemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930627241658239248noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4203201404322785078.post-84469255436125403462016-09-12T18:36:00.000-07:002016-09-12T18:36:35.288-07:00Ahoy, Mateys!
The LMES Bookfair is running all week until Thursday. We will go tomorrow to preview the books and make wish lists. Students can bring money, or you may want to see their lists first and buy later on in the week. Tuesday morning before school is "Muffins with Mom". Wednesday before school is "Donuts with Dad" if you and your child want to visit the bookfair together this week.

Remember, Thursday night is Pirate Fest! There will be excitement for the whole family from 6 to 8. I will man the bouncy house! Come one, come all for a night of fun!

There is a school wide reading challenge for this week. There will be a winner from each grade level as well as a grade level winner. We could win if 2nd Grade wins or we could read the most in 2nd grade! So get those books ready! Record minutes on the blue reading log in the homework notebook and initial each night. Only nightly reading will count on this challenge. Good luck all you pirates who read!

Coming soon: RazKids! I was going to add it to the sites, but I left my password at school. Be looking for it soon. It's a cool website where students will choose books to read on their reading level. They can highlight their text based answers in the book before they answer. Stay tuned!

September 30 will be trackout day, early release, club day and report card day! What a day! Let's keep working to encourage the children to always give their best. Have them talk about what they've learned and explain the details to you.

Have a great week of "piratey" fun!Donna Freemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930627241658239248noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4203201404322785078.post-22504226642135184242016-08-28T18:00:00.000-07:002016-08-28T18:00:25.453-07:00Hello Everyone!
As August is winding down, we have completed several things. One big thing is the completion of mClass testing. Everyone has been tested in Reading Levels and in Fluency. This is a beginning of the year dipstick type test that helps us set realistic goals for the end of the year.
We have also become accustomed to the procedures and expections of 2nd grade. Everyone has a role in managing the classroom needs and all of us are working on the 7 Habits as we go about our day.
We have a few upcoming dates I want to remind you of:
Sept. 1 - Ident A Kid day
Sept. 5 - Labor Day Holiday
Sept. 6 - Fall Picture Day
Sept. 9 - Early Release at 1:15
Sept. 12 - 16 - Book Fair "Pirate Festival Week" Arrrgh!
Sept. 15 - Fall Festival 6:00 - 8:00
Sept. 30 - Early Release at 1:15
Sept. 30 - Report Cards go home (Track Out Day!)

Remember, you can find these dates under the "Calendar" tab. Also, keep your child reading and talking about his/her books. Thanks for signing the homework checkoff sheets! Have a great week!Donna Freemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930627241658239248noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4203201404322785078.post-58519705634250452172016-08-15T19:09:00.000-07:002016-08-15T19:09:46.838-07:002nd Graders are adjusting to new procedures, gaining confidence and learning to make good choices. As we settle in, please make sure your child is getting enough sleep and has a quiet place to complete his/her homework. The first few weeks of a new grade level are unusually tiring and everyone may need a little extra sleep (including me)!

Open House is this Thursday evening at 6:00 pm. We hope you'll be able to attend and find out a few more details about life in 2nd grade.

Early Release is this Friday, Aug. 19th. It is also our first Club Day. Students will take time to review the club options and pick their top 3 choices.

Our first Letterland assessment went home today. If your child did not do well, don't worry. They are learning what it takes to study for the test on Friday and how to maximize their time in stations. They can easily recover. If a student continues to struggle, we will discuss a modified word list on an individual basis.

Remember to sign the Monday Folder showing you have reviewed that weeks work; only one signature per week is needed.

Have a great week and hope to see you Thursday night!Donna Freemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930627241658239248noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4203201404322785078.post-49546025221638324722016-08-08T05:40:00.001-07:002016-08-08T05:47:31.823-07:00We had a great first week! We know because we were all so tired! We created a class mission statement, we listed possible roles we will fulfill in our classroom and around the school, and we had a taste of 2nd grade academics. Monday folders will come home today. Please remove the items on the Keep at Home side and review/return any items on the Send Back side. Remember to sign the sheet on the back showing you received the folder and saw it's contents. It's rather tricky since it's on the back of the folder and easy to forget. Also, remember to check the calendar tab at the top for upcoming dates.

While we're getting accustomed to new procedures and routines, I want to thank you so much for all the supplies you have sent in. I feel so blessed to have you as classroom parents this year. Also, for the first time in memory, ALL the students in this class are kind and respectful to me as well as their classmates. They chose an awesome class mission statement:

We are kind.
We always do our best.
We are strong and and never give up because...
We synergize,
We work together!

So far, I can say that is an accurate picture of who they are.
Have a great week!Donna Freemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12930627241658239248noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4203201404322785078.post-47868647600152337712016-08-01T17:02:00.000-07:002016-08-01T17:02:31.778-07:00Welcome to 2nd Grade!!!

We're off to a great start as we familiarize ourselves with the new schedule and practice rules and procedures. We had a class full of leaders today as we did a lot of information gathering.

Newsflash! I forgot to send the Monday Folders home on Monday. If that is the only thing I forgot, well, it's been a successful day. They will come home tomorrow. You will have forms to fill out and return if you were unable to attend Meet the Teacher night. They are new this year and have a sheet on the back for you to initial that you've received and viewed everything sent in the folder. Some things you will keep (on the Keep side) and some things will need to be sent back to school (on the Return side).

SPECIALS ROTATIONS!!!
We have a 6 day specials rotation this year. The rotation will go as follows: Art, Culture and Diversity, Leadership, STEM, Music, and PE. We went to Art today. We won't have PE until Monday. You can put this rotation on your calendars or you can rely on this post each week to update our specials for the week.

Homework
We are learning homework procedures at school this week. All homework will be completed in school for this week. Next week we will send homework on Monday. You will have a check-off sheet to initial each night. Your students will be able to explain it thoroughly. Each week we will have math, a comprehension passage with questions, and a free choice read and respond. Letterland words will be included for study/practice. This is significantly less homework than last year, but we will try it and see if we can make it successful. You can always augment by extra free choice reading and response, creating your own math problems, or practicing math facts to 20.

As you view this website, keep in mind my calendar tab is not up to date. This is due to the fact my calendar and I are separated at this moment, but I'll get it updated tomorrow. Sorry for the delay.

Communication this year will consist of a website update weekly and posts on Dojo during the week if necessary. If you have a transportation change, please notify the office instead of using Dojo. I will not check it in the middle of a school day.

Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful sons and daughters with me this year. It is an honor to have them in my class. Have a great week!
